In the conventional method for measuring TV ratings, the company selects a certain number of households in each area nationwide, and viewer ratings are measured by a machine installed in a TV set in each selected household. Rating data are collected through a telecommunication line.
However, the conventional technique only detects ratings information for each program at the time of the program's original broadcast. It is unable to collect data on people who have watched original broadcasts on personal computers with built in TV tuners or who record programs to watch later on video players.
